Well! It all started when our fourth birthday was fast approaching. 'What about a garden party' that was the suggestion, 'and even better still, can we have a fifth birthday party too , a special one'! Well that was it, a certain person (NOT mentioning any names here but the words: leader, choir and our, all spring to mind) decided we would have a concert. (My idea was far sillier still - you really would not believe it.) A CONCERT ! Well yes, what do you think ? Minds now a whirring, fingers tapping, emails here, there and everywhere. Yes let's do it! How about a promenade concert is another thought. Yes brilliant idea. Ideas getting bigger all the time. More fingers tap tap tapping out those letters on the keyboard. How about the Old Vicarage and the Church? Marquees ordered, wine and glasses sorted. Must remember to order the weather, have not done that yet ! Different fingers now tap, tap, tapping, thoughts a whirling, special song words written just for us. Posters and tickets all ready to print, tables and marquees and loads of other stuff all sorted too . Right all done, we are all ready to go... Oh! Is it REALLY still only February, do we still have to wait another FIVE MONTHS... Oh no! WE got carried away.
Easter now, chocolate bunnies and eggs in numbers down the hatch they all go.
Learning our part in ernest, our brains start to overheat and little puffs of steam start popping from our ears.
Will the words stay in our heads or will they sprout wings and flutter away like butterflies upon the breeze. May, fast approaches - on wings it flies away, now June is here - printing to be done, adverts to post and tickets all set to sell, what food shall we cook? what wine shall we buy?....July has, at last arrived, just the last minute things to do, but we have the wine now, that is the most important thing. Now we must wait, the hardest part of all, just a few days to go and they seem to last forever, then here it is, everything is set to go.
The audience start to arrive, pouring through the gate they come. We thought we had sold a lot of tickets but still they come.
Off behind the hedge we go, a surprise not to be missed. Waiting now - some excited, some pensive deep in thought. 'Can we really do this' is the collective thought that runs through our heads.
"Over my head I hear music in the air" we start to walk, a cross over to negotiate then onto the bridge we go, a tingle runs down my spine, how beautiful it all sounds.
Crossing back again and into the lime light we go.
More songs come and go, how beautiful they all sound. Poems to hear...Now "Alice in Wonderland" and we are transported to the croquet match with flamingoes and a grumpy old queen. Alice too plays her part and off she goes to find her flamingo mallet.
Garden songs now commence and back over the bridge we walk, singing our own specially written song " I dream of lazing in the sunshine with a glass of wine " now we have gone the audience follow behind across the bridge they go "what is in store" they must think.
Into a glade we quietly tread...The flicker and glow of candle light awaits us. Oh! What a sight, we are amazed - this really is a wonderland to see.
"Vela" and audience arrive one by one, two by two, we sing our hearts out - now we know we can do this.
Through the programme we go song to song and poem to poem the wonderland is drawing to a close. Will it be over so soon?
" In Green by Day" and "Keep you in Peace" are the last we sing. Tingles running now all over. How beautiful it has been.
So many thanks to say. How can we put it into words. Well maybe best not really, those tingles, may turn to tears.
Then it is over, we turn and greet our family and friends, turn again to the bridge and lawn we go, food and wine and chatter, chatter.
Dusk is upon us and so it all comes to an end.
Village Voices one and all you came up trumps, we did well - Congratulations
